Something I wonder as well, but for some reason I was able to convince the good people at AAD headquarters in Kingston Tasmania that I was a good fit for the Station Communications Technical Officer job. As the sole tech on station I get to look after our ANARESAT Sat Com – a 9 M/bps satellite link and our best contact with the rest of the world. Plus of a couple of VHF repeaters, about 100 VHF radios, some HF radios, some medical equipment, office printers and a bit of system administration/help desk IT work for the station.
All in all it’s a bit of fun, but I will happily blow it off for a day to go count penguins in the name of science instead.
